Scoliosis Explained: Managing Pain & Supporting Your Spine in Liverpool

Scoliosis is more common than most people think, and for many people, it isn’t just about how the spine looks, but how it feels day-to-day. Tight muscles, aching shoulders, fatigue, tension, and discomfort are all things people often quietly put up with.

Here in Liverpool, I support a number of clients with scoliosis who simply want to feel more comfortable in their body, move better, and manage pain or tightness. This post is here to explain what scoliosis is in simple terms, and how sports massage can help as part of a wider management plan.

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is when the spine curves sideways rather than running straight down the back. Sometimes the curve looks like an “S” or a “C”. It can range from very mild to more noticeable.

It often develops during teenage years, but some people develop it later in life due to wear-and-tear, posture or injury.

Typical signs include:

• One shoulder sitting higher than the other
• Uneven hips
• Clothes sit differently on each side
• Muscle tightness or “knots”
• Aching in the back, shoulders or neck
• Fatigue when standing or sitting too long

Not everyone has pain, but when they do, it’s usually linked to muscle imbalance and tension.

What Does a 40–50 Degree Curve Mean?

Doctors measure scoliosis using something called the Cobb angle:

• 10–25 degrees — mild
• 25–45 degrees — moderate
• 45+ degrees — severe

So a curve around 48 degrees is classed as severe. This means it should be monitored by a spinal specialist or orthopaedic consultant. Some people may be offered bracing or surgery, while others are managed conservatively depending on age, symptoms, and whether the curve is still changing.

Important to say:

Sports massage does not straighten the spine,
but it can make living with scoliosis far more comfortable.

Why Does Scoliosis Cause Tight Muscles?

Because the spine curves, the muscles on each side work unevenly:

• One side becomes shortened and tight
• The other side becomes longer and strained
• The body constantly compensates to stay upright

This can lead to:

✔ Trigger points (“knots”)
✔ Lower back or neck pain
✔ Shoulder tension
✔ Hip tightness
✔ Tiredness and stiffness

Emotionally, it can sometimes feel draining too, especially for younger people trying to keep up with study, work, or sport.

How Sports Massage Can Help

The aim of treatment is not to “fix” the curve, but to:

✔ Reduce muscle tension
✔ Improve movement
✔ Lower pain and stiffness
✔ Support posture
✔ Help the body relax
✔ Improve awareness of how the body moves

Many clients say they feel:

“lighter, freer and more comfortable afterwards”

sometimes, even sleeping better or feeling less stressed.

My Approach to Working With Scoliosis Clients in Liverpool

Everyone’s scoliosis pattern is different, so treatment is personalised.

During your session, I look at:

• How your spine and hips move
• Where muscles are tight or overworking
• Your posture and movement patterns
• Breathing
• Daily habits like studying, lifting or sitting

Then I choose techniques that suit your body, such as:

Sports & deep tissue massage
Gentle fascial release
✔ Trigger point therapy
✔ Assisted stretching
✔ Foot, leg & hip work (often very useful)
✔ Relaxation & breathing work
✔ Self-care advice you can use at home

And of course, pressure and comfort always come first.

What About Young Adults & Students?

Here in Liverpool, I work with multiple students, including those in nursing placements who are on their feet for long shifts or carrying heavy kit.

Massage can help with:

✔ Muscle fatigue
✔ Posture strain
✔ Stress & anxiety
✔ Study-related stiffness

Early support can make a big difference long-term.

Helpful Daily Tips

Alongside massage, things that often help include:

• Staying active, gentle movement beats stiffness
• Breaking up long periods of sitting
• Strengthening hips, core & back safely
• Stretching gently, not forcing it
• Managing stress levels
• Listening to your body

I can also show simple movements you can use between sessions.

Is Massage Safe If You Have Scoliosis?

Yes, when carried out by a trained therapist and when your condition is monitored medically.

We’ll always work within your comfort levels and avoid anything that doesn’t feel right. If needed, I’m happy to liaise with your physio, consultant or GP.

Living Well With Scoliosis

Scoliosis doesn’t define you. Many people live full, active lives - running, training, working long shifts, studying and doing everything they love.

The goal is simply to help you:

✔ feel more comfortable
✔ move with confidence
✔ reduce pain
✔ improve posture awareness
✔ and relax

So your spine, and the rest of you, feel supported.
